Abatement of Nitrous Oxide, Methane, and the Other Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases: The Need for a Systems Approach

چکیده

Carbon dioxide currently accounts for about 49 percent of the radiative forcing of the atmosphere that is attributable to greenhouse gases (3.0 watts per square meter [W m-2]; Houghton et al. 2001). Tropospheric ozone and black carbon are responsible for another 18 percent, and the well-mixed greenhouse gases (GHGs)—principally methane, nitrous oxide, and various halocarbons—are responsible for the remaining 33 percent (Figure 29.1). Changes in well-mixed GHGs and in black carbon, tropospheric ozone, and ozone precursors (NOx, CO, and NMVOCs), whether engineered or unintentional, could thus have a substantial impact on the radiative forcing of future atmospheres.

Multi-gas Emission Reduction for Climate Change Policy: an Application of Fund

The costs of greenhouse gas emission reduction are investigated with abatement of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide using the FUND model. The central policy scenario keeps anthropogenic radiative forcing below 4.5 Wm. If CO2 emission reduction were the only possibility to meet this target, the net present value of consumption losses would be $45 trillion; with abatement of the other ga...

The abatement challenge for Australian Agriculture

Introduction According to the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (NGGI 2007) the agricultural sector contributes around 16% of national greenhouse gas emissions (Figure 1). The main greenhouse gases emitted from agriculture include methane lost during rumen digestion (enteric) and nitrous oxide lost from nitrogen fertilisers, animal excreta and soils (Figure 1). Agriculture accounts for 60% and ...

تأثیر کاربری‌های مختلف اراضی بر تصاعد گازهای گلخانه‌ای

An increase in the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the soil surface to the atmosphere has been of worldwide concern over the last several decades. Carbon dioxide is recognized as a significant contributor to global warming and climatic change, accounting for 60% of total greenhouse effect. The aim of this research was to dete...

The Role of Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases in Meeting Kyoto Targets

Preliminary analysis indicates that careful consideration of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions and sinks from a variety of sources as provided in the Kyoto Protocol is warranted. Sources, projections, abatement options and uncertainties in these estimations are investigated in support of Post-Kyoto assessments of burden sharing in the European Union. Despite large uncertainties, evidence is give...
